I remind myself that I am not a god.
But I’m pretty damn good.
I am writing this issue of the SELLING THE TRUTH TODAY newsletter on Thursday night and will be using advanced technology to publish it tomorrow (!), because tomorrow morning, I will be at 9Round Kickboxing Fitness for my 600th workout, the most workouts to date of any member at my location.
I am not a person of extremes. Not in my views. Not in my behaviors. If we’re going to keep evolving, we must keep our minds and avenues open.
But I commit. If I say I’m in, I’m IN. That’s probably why there are a number of things I haven’t done:
- Bank Robbery
- Bare-Knuckle Brawling
- Bungee Jumping
And those are just three of the “B”s.
But I want to remain as healthy and fit as possible, without giving up the things I truly love, like baked goods (specifically, babka). B’s again. Not sure why.
Since my mantra is SELL THE TRUTH (and my new book is Selling the Truth: A ‘Semoir’ with Insights for Life and Business), I gotta look reality in the face and acknowledge that 5 days of kickboxing each week is just enough to keep me looking like a short, stocky 58 year-old dude until November when I turn 59.
Then what? More workouts…?
I don’t have specific weight goals. Ideally, I’m going for less Nathan Lane, more Robert Downey.
One thing to which I do take exception is the notion that nobody gives a shit what we look like. The whole “It’s not about you” culture is something I have a problem with.
Naturally, caring for one another means we’ve got each other covered and I subscribe to that ideal. I have been a service provider for a long-ass minute, and I take no greater joy than in celebrating the uniqueness and outstanding wins of those I serve.
I take the view that the world is bigger and more significant than I am, and that loving others is purposeful. And that caring for myself and how I treat myself is instructive for those with whom I share this journey.
And we should strive to remain vital, engaged, and relevant in the face of lethargy-enabling technology and other other numbing over-indulgences that make us sound less imaginative than we are.
Sidebar – Speaking generally of AI – a wonderful tool with a bright utilitarian future – check out this actual exchange with ChatGPT after I’d prompted it to pull up some quotes from my book (which I’ve uploaded and reminded it to draw on from its memory) for an article:
As such, one of the ways in which I remain relevant is by encouraging the authentic voices of my clients, because when something declares itself as fauxthentic by virtue of its very name…believe it!
So, I’m celebrating my 600th workout at 9Round. I’m going to congratulate myself on this accomplishment. Because I am worth it. I’m going to celebrate, in fact, by sharing something I’ve recently discovered: it is safe for me to welcome all bliss and success into my life, because I am not a schmuck. I am a mensch. I can be trusted with my own power.
I take that step, because many of you have not. You have not as yet acknowledged that it is ok to care about yourself. YOU do not yet believe that you can be trusted with your own power, or that you deserve it. As a result, your brand suffers. That is a disservice to those you wish to help.
The proof – and yes, I’ve said it before – is that if you are worried about becoming a schmuck, you are not in danger of becoming one.
So, start today: in the comments, mention one thing that you are truly proud of. Whether or not, it makes you comfortable… perhaps you’re chiming in to encourage others who may be sitting on themselves, living the lie that it’s “not about me.”
As a society, do we matter? Is it about “us,” at least?
Then we ought to get this straight: without you and me, there is no us.
